EC has worsened our position – Otokunor

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Peter Boamah Otokunor says his party’s position on the move by the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) to compile a new voters’ register has been worsened after the IPAC meeting on Thursday.

The EC at the instance of its Eminent Advisory Committee (EAC) called a meeting of the Interparty Advisory Committee over the decision to compile a new register for the 2020 elections.

The meeting was held at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra.

The EC made a renewed presentation to the parties in the presence of some civil society organisations (CSOs) and development partners.

The parties were also asked to make inputs in terms of questions, observations and suggestions

But the meeting is said to have ended inconclusively as the parties demanded further clarifications on the technical approach of the move.

Speaking on Thursday, Mr Otokunor said the EC could not convince the opposition parties about their reason for the new register.

He observed that the NDC’s position rather got worsened after the meeting, calling the EC’s presentation “absurd”.

He said the NDC will oppose any move by the EC to compile a new register as the data – which is to be used for the new register – have no issues to warrant a change.

The EC, meanwhile, has indicated that the compilation of the register will start in April and the voter roll be ready by November 8, just in time for the elections.
